12mo, (120mm), [160]p, 2 leaves excised. A good copy in original grey/brown cloth, gilt lettered and ornately blocked and coloured in black, red, green, pink and blue, slightly rubbed at the head and tail of the backstrip and the extreme corner tips, printed floral decorated endleaves, all edges gilt. An autograph album of friends, probably intended as a gift book and standing in the tradition of interactive, humorous and lightly instructive texts for the young. The volume is divided into 20 'chapters' each of several pages inviting friends to list their thoughts such as matters as favourite qualities, noblest aim in life, vice most detested, favourite persons of note, &c. Three such 'chapters' have been completed, the first by one Jos W Oliphant (perhaps the original owner) dated 1917,and whose idea of true happiness is '£100,00 a year, & nothing to do but travel.' While asked whether he considers marriage a failure writes: 'In the majority of cases, Yes.'
