New York: Charles Scribner's Sons / London: Temple House, 1907., 1907. Good. - Quarto, 9-1/2 inches high by 6-1/2 inches wide. Hardcovers, two volumes uniformly bound in light green cloth decorated and titled in gilt on the spines. The top edges are gilt. The rear cover of the first volume is stained. viii, [2] plus pages 1-768; viii, [2] plus pages 1-512, 521-680 and 699-768. The volumes are profusely illustrated in color and black & white. The second volume is lacking pages 513-520 and pages 681-698 none of which affects the Wharton novel. Pages 669-672 are detached but present. Good. RARE appearance of Wharton's novel prior to it's publication in book form October 19, 1907. The novel is illustrated by Alonzo Kimball with color frontispieces for the January and May issues, 8 black & white plates and 1 color plate. On pages 194-195 of the second volume is the first, and only, appearance of Arthur Rackham's illustrations for "Pan o' Dreamy" by William Harvey Woods. Rackham's work consists of a black & white plate and 2 smaller drawings. According to Rackham bibliographers these drawings were not reprinted. The first appearance of Theodore Roosevelt's "Small Country Neighbors" illustrated with photographs is published on pages 385-395 of the second volume. It was later published in a new edition of Roosevelt's "Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter". Among the profuse illustrations in these 2 volumes are numerous color plates: 3 by N.C. Wyeth, 1 by Maxfield Parrish, 4 by Harrison Fisher, together with 5 in Black & white, 4 by Frank Schoonover, 1 by Birge Harrison and a color plate by Jules Guerin of the rendering for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. "Spanish Impressions" is illustrated with 10 color illustrations in the text by Edward Penfield. "The Child in Fairyland" by Sarah S. Stilwell is illustrated with 3 full page color illustrations and a color vignette.
