Davies in the Strand, London; Period calf leather binding; Gilt, red morocco title label; Five raised bands; Main title, and half-titles for both Life of Author & Fables, as well as dedication & two-page rear advertisement; Period plain endpapers; Illustrated throughout with engraved decorations; total length: ffep, xii (prelims), 72 (life of author), 249 (complete fables), 2 (advertisements), 3 rear blanks; book dimensions: 18 cm X 11 cm William Coxe (1748-1828), an English historian & church clergyman, was also a traveling companion and tutor to nobility from 1771 to 1786 Condition: very good condition antique book; both leather boards securely attached; hinges cracked and somewhat fragile; hinge of rear board unseparated and lower corner of front hinge shows separation, yet all threads still connected and holding firmly; contents are complete and in very good condition; all pages intact and securely bound, meeting collation; paper shows light toning, as well as scattered foxing; occasional minor spots and handling marks; staining to pp106-107; rubbed and scuffed surface of calf-leather; wear to edges and corners bumped; spine with some darkening; first owner's inscription, dated 1797, at head of title; later gifting inscription on upper portion of front blank fly-leaf (adhesion marks from old label below).
