Approx. 3 ½ in. x 5 ½ in. 192 pp. Fifty fables plus an Intro. in Part I, 16 fables in Part II. The Intro. and 61 of the Fables have illustrations. Blue-green morocco leather binding by the Rowfant Bindery. Five raised bands on the spine; the spine has browned; title, date, and the Rowfant Bindery identified in gilt on the spine. Gilt design on the front panel, and the title in gilt on a brown-leather inlay. (Not a typical Rowfant binding.) T.E.G. The pages are browned from age; some pages have ink marks which have also browned. A few illustrations have been duplicated in part on the reverse in pencil. The recto after p. 78 was the blank reverse of an illustration. This page is no longer blank; it shows the name "Nathaniel Phillips" written twice in ink, with two series of numbers: one series runs from 1 to 13; the other from 1 to 28. Also written in is "1771." Marbled end-papers. Bookplate of an early-1900s prominent Clevelander. A few copies of this book are held by libraries but rarely does one come on the market for sale.
