Beschreibung
A two volume set of Francis Bond Head's notes on his time staying in Paris, during which he desired to experience Paris as a true Parisian, rather than a tourist. Complete in two volumes. In 1851 Francis Bond Head spent a few months in Paris. During his stay, he avoided the recommendations he had received from acquaintances of things to do in the city, and decided instead on entertaining himself as a true Parisian. He never went to the theatre, and only when into a cafe once, as well as avoiding receiving or paying visits. In these two volumes, Head notes the life of the poor in Paris, various streets and gardens, the railway, the post-office, his lodgings, washing-boats, and prisons. It is a fascinating snapshot of life in the heart of France in the mid-nineteenth century. Francis Head was a Lieutenant during the rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada. He had a talent for graphic descriptions, and had a great love of nature and for learning about the lives of those less privileged than him. His most successful book was 'Bubbles from the Brunnens of Nassau', which documenting his travels. In the original publisher's marbled cloth binding, with gilt decoration to the front board and to the spine, and in a protective brodart wrap. Externally, smart. Light shelfwear to the boards and to the spines. Light mark to the rear board of Volume I. A light sunning to the spines and to the boards near the joints. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. The odd spot to the fore edges. Hinges of both volumes are starting but firm. Slight mark to the front pastedown and to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume II. Dampstaining to the front endpaper and front free endpapers of Volume II, as well as to the rear endpaper, rear pastedown, and to the rear free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with the odd scattered spot throughout, mostly to the first and last few pages. Small chip to the fore edge of page 165 to 168 of Volume I, not affecting text. Light dampstaining to the head of the page from pages 119 to 170, and from pages 240 to 265. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 608P10
