In half calf leather bindings.This lovely botanical work offers advice to readers on popular and common flowers for gardens. Hibberd was one of the most successful Victorian gardening writers. He is known for being ahead of his time. For instance, he promoted environmental self awareness, conservation and animal welfare well before these were regarded causes. He also promoted amateur gardening.Frederick Edward Hulme was an amateur botanist and illustrator. His most famous work isFamiliar Wild Flowers published in nine volumes between 1878 and 1905.These are undated copies. However, they were published by Cassell at varying dates indicated by Volume I and Volume II listing Cassell, Petter, Gaplin & Co, and Volume III listing Cassell and Company, Limited. The company's name changed to the former in 1878 and then changed to the latter in 1883, signifying the date range of these copies.Volume I includes 40 chromolithograph plates. Collated, complete.Volume II includes 40 chromolithograph plates. Collated, complete.Volume III includes 40 chromolithograph plates, and 14 plates to the latter 56 pages, the first part of Volume IV which has been bound into this copy. Collated, complete. In half calf over cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart. Some bumping to the head and tail of the spines, with particular wear to volumes I and III, and a tear to the tail of the spine of volume II. The rear hinge of vol II is starting. Significant bleeding from the front piece of volume II to the front endpapers through to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with a few spots. Tissue guards are mostly present and in tact, very few with minor marks, folds and tears, in particular the tissue guard for the front piece of vol II.
