Born in 1594, Howell is considered the first writer to earn his living solely from writing in the English language. His "Familiar Letters" (Epistolae Ho-Elianae) is believed by many to be the first epistolary novel. These books are beautifully bound in fine signed bindings by Riviere & Son, full Morocco leather with hand-tooled gilt lettering and decorations, 5 raised bands on each spine, marbled endpapers, all page edges gilt. These volumes contain dozens of illustrations not found in other editions of this title. Many of the illustrations are from original engraving plates, with plate impressions still present on the paper. Includes engraved plates showing the true autographs of royalty and many other notable people. The books are quite clean and stain-free, square and straight, still firm and tight in their bindings, no pages loose, torn, or missing. The corners are unbumped. The leather over the exterior hinges is worn and on Vol. I, the exterior hinges are a bit cracked, but all interior hinges are sound and undamaged, and all boards remain well attached. These remain sound, very solid books with no major structural defects. Internally, all pages are clean and stain-free, no foxing, with only a hint of age-toning. All text and illustrations are crisp, sharp, and eminently legible. We detected no writing, underlining, highlighting, or markings of any such kind in either book. In addition to the wear over the exterior hinges, there is some minor wear and perhaps a bit of chipping to the leather at the spine ends and some light scuffing to the raised bands, but otherwise the leather bindings show very little wear.
