Beschreibung
(Geological Survey of Canada). 1884 - 1931. The Faribault -- Fletcher Geological Maps of Nova Scotia. Being the nearly complete Nova Scotia series ofcoloured lithographic geological maps surveyed, compiled and drawn by HughFletcher, or by E. R. Faribault, or by both Fletcher and Faribault, or (forlater maps) by their successors. The maps comprising a complete sequence of seventy-one colour-printed and consecutively numbered Nova Scotia geological maps produced between 1884 and 1909 by the Geological Survey of CanadaTOGETHER WITH: a further fourteen maps of irregular numbering (and of a total of seventeen published) in continuation of the same series, dated 1905 -1931, ALSO WITH: two smaller scale maps completing the series. These two being: "PROVINCE OF NOVA SCOTIA AND PART OF NEW BRUNSWICK" (Map shows, in fact, only a portion of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia and portions of two adjacent counties of New Brunswick.); and MAP OF THE WESTERN PORTION OF NOVASCOTIA. In total: 87 maps. Lacking only maps numbered 73, 87 and 89 of theseries as published. Full color printed. Included in the detailing of the maps is a wealth of non-geological data of considerable cultural historicalinterest. As well as roads, parish and county boundaries, and school and church locations, above ground mine workings, the maps identify some existingshops (with some named), lobster factories, mills (some named), post offices (or telegraph and post offices), forges, fishing stations, "stores" (as:Jersey Co's stores), small mining operations (copper, coal, manganese), quarries (plaster, marble), kilns (lime, plaster), wharfs, engine houses (these adjacent wharfs), saw and shingle mills, a carding mill, a weaving mill, hotels (unnamed), tanneries, carriage factories, cheese factories, steamboat landings, navigational lights (with frequencies), a "coloured settlement", a convent, etc. Additionally, with many homes and farms -- where the owners names were known to the surveyors -- the names of owners are provided.Scale: 1 mile to one inch. Map sheet widths vary from approx. 23" to 26"; heights from approx. 15" to 18" (and in many cases these variances are due to some cropping). The width of the maps proper is, for the most part, 18 1/2"; and height, for the most part, is 12 1/2". The maps are faced with adhesive cellulose, and some are additionally backed with linen. Maps numbered1 - 24 are "To illustrate reports by Hugh Fletcher, 1879 - 1884"; maps numbered 25 - 36 are "To illustrate Report by Messrs Hugh Fletcher and E. R. Faribault Part P Annual Report, Vol. II 1886". A most useful reference, giventhe discontinuous numbering of the later maps in the series, is the "IndexMap of Nova Scotia" provided for the Faribault -- Fletcher Geological Series in: Gregory, Diane J. (compiler). Bibliography of the Geology of Nova Scotia. [Halifax]: Nova Scotia Department of Mines, 1975. p. 230. Stored rolled. Occasional penciling, minor de-lamination of cellulose affecting a fewmaps, and with institutional departmental markings to some later issues. The maps in very good condition overall. 3,500.00.
