Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition. good readable copy with water damage, bright red linen-like covers and spine with title inside square in black printing on the cover, the printing extends outside of the square, back cover is blank, spine with black solid square and title in red within the square, author, publisher and publisher's symbol on the spine, end pages are foxed and stained with red from the cover having water damage. The jacket has left paper stuck to the bottom of the front cover and is still stuck to the back cover, the pages are clean and tight. The Dust Jacket is in red, blue, black and white colors, the background is blue and black to simulate weaving, a wavy red square is in the center with part of the title in white and part in black lettering, another square in outline of red is superimposed over the smaller red square, the author's name is at the bottom of the dust jacket in white script, the spine of the jacket is similar but parts are faded away, back cover is a synopsis of the book, front flap gives a story of the writer and back flap continues with his bio.some stamping in black is inside the back cover. Dutton & Company, the publisher of this book. You can read the long inscription from the photo I've provided. The front and rear covers outer edges appear to have been exposed to (my guess) water. They are smooth but have the discoloration which you can see. The lettering on the front and spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The two top corners have a small spot of rub-through. The top edge of the spine has a sliver of rubbing. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. There are nine consecutive pages with a crease near their top corner (not touching the print). There are three with a crease at their bottom corner, also not touching the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. As you can see, the dust jacket looks like it got into the ring with Mr. Manners. There is a scuff on the front, also a loss off its bottom edge, small losses at the spine ends and losses at the junctures between the front and rear covers and their end papers. The flaps have narrow clips at their corners, but the price is present and untouched. The flaps are very clean. The jacket is protected by fitted cover. Writing about his uncle: 'William Manners (pen name for William Rosenberg) wrote many mysteries, had a notable career as a professional boxer (52 pro bouts, 51 knock-outs), and wrote several non-fiction books that were very successful. Among them, Father and the Angels, an autobiographical account of growing up the son of a Rabbi; Wake Up and Write!-- a quick and energized course in how to be a writer; TR and Will, the story of the stormy friendship between William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt; Patience and Fortitude, the story of Fiorella LaGuardia, the outspoken mayor of New York. He also wrote mysteries and was editor for Alfred Hitchcock magazine for a number of years. His wife, Ande Manners, wrote a self help book-- A Parents' Guide to Music Lessons, and a book titled Poor Cousins that was critically acclaimed and a New York Times Best Seller. It detailed the story of East European Jews and how they were treated by their already 'landed' cousins when they reached America. Uncle William was a life long athlete and vegetarian, even during his years as a professional boxer. He and my mother Ruth Ann Manners wrote The Quick and Easy Vegetarian Cookbook together and it has enjoyed 24 years of multiple new printings and re-releases in more than 14 languages. William Manners passed away in 1994.' 'The first of his 23 books was 'Father and the Angels,' which described his youthful years in Zanesville as the son of a remarkable man, Rabbi Harris Rosenberg.'
