Inhaltsangabe: If you've been putting off that visit to the doctor's office, pull up a comfortable chair and settle in with Fears and Cheers by Myriam Selinger Sanders. Dr. Selinger Sanders speaks to her readers as she spoke to her patients-with humor, compassion, firmness, and down-to-earth common sense. These pages address some of the most common medical issues women encounter: the first gynecological exam, methods of birth control, difficulties conceiving and carrying a baby to term, the birth process, menopause, hormone replacement therapy, and more. Through stories about her experiences-some heartwarming, some hysterical- Dr. Selinger Sanders soothes women's fears about those annual checkups, helping us understand the benefits of building a strong, trusting relationship with our doctors.

Auszug. © Nachdruck mit Genehmigung. Alle Rechte vorbehalten.: When I first arrived in the United States, holding in my hand my medical diploma and my immigration papers, fearful of all and everything around me, I was called into the office of the immigration officer for questioning.

The questions were not what I had expected. They were not about the United States, or about politics, or about my relatives, dead or alive.

Instead the immigration officer asked me if I was a prostitute, if I had practiced prostitution in the past, and if I intended to practice prostitution in the future.

I think I was too intimidated by the whole process to be able to give a deadpan answer, so I just answered no to everything.

My God! Would I give him an answer today.

I would tell him about all my babies, the American citizens I helped to bring into this world, the American citizens who are a part of today's society.

I would show him all the patients I took care of, patients who are productive and respected members of society, patients who—with my help—regained their health and now live a normal life.

I would teach him the respect and consideration he should give to all people—and especially to women.

That encounter with the immigration officer was what I would today call sexual harassment or discrimination. But at that moment I did not care—I just wanted to kiss the American soil, and I did.

Since then there have been many other times when I felt like kissing the American soil, and many times I have thanked God for giving me the opportunity to be part of this great country.

As a young resident physician at Bellevue Hospital and New York University Hospital in New York, I had the privilege of training with great surgeons and great teachers. I joined the staff of New York University Medical Center after completion of my residency and opened my own office.

I was attracted to obstetrics and gynecologic surgery because I considered them to be creative professions in the field of medicine, a form of art. And unlike the artist, whose works may not be appreciated until long after their creator is gone, the obstetrician's results are there fast—nine months at the most. Surgery, too, provides results and satisfaction in a relatively short period of time, as the patient becomes healthy and well. I liked to look upon my relationship with each patient as a piece of art that I carved to fit the needs of each individual woman.

From the first day of entering practice, I kept a ledger with the names of every patient, the procedure done, complications (if any), and the results from the pathology laboratory, the last item being the main proof of my indications for surgery and the confirmation of my diagnosis.

I wanted to write this book to show my gratitude and respect to all of these patients, who gave me so much satisfaction and so many opportunities to give them the best I had. I want them to know that they made my life beautiful and successful, that they made my life interesting and exciting and filled it with unexpected events and surprises. I never had a dull moment and never a boring day.

It was my good fortune over the years to deliver mostly healthy, beautiful babies. I did not want to count the number while I was in practice; I thought it might bring bad luck. The retirement years, I thought, would be the time for counting. I thought I would match each one of my babies and patients with one of my gray hairs—the more difficult cases would get several gray hairs.

Then I thought, why count gray hairs so long as beauty parlors have to make a living? (Which reminds me of how many times I had to run out on my hairdresser with my hair dripping wet to deliver one of these adorable creatures, who are as selfish as can be!)

Writing this book has been a wonderful challenge for me. My hope is that women who read it will better understand the necessity of having regular physical checkups. I'd like to see each woman creating a trusting and friendly tie with her gynecologist. It is a relationship that will survive over the miles and through the years, especially if the gynecologist is a woman. (I still get calls for advice from patients from all over the world.) Often, this relationship is lifesaving, as you will see in many of the cases I describe.

The patients' names that I use are not, of course, their real names. But the stories I tell you about my patients are true, and telling is my way of saying thanks to them all for giving me pride in my work, and for the feeling that I had something great to live for every day of my life as a doctor.
