Beschreibung
Hardcover, 172 pages plus the plates. With maps and illustrations. Reindeer were introduced into Alaska by 1891 because of a crash in caribou herds. The author, Sheldon Jackson, was general agent of education in Alaska at the time along with Captain Healy that brought 16 reindeer from Siberia to Amaknak Island in the Aleutians. The introduction states that this was done with the hope of saving the inhabitants of northern and northwestern regions from starvation; the government of the US appropriated $6,000 for their effort. Profusely illustrated with fabulous black and white vintage photographic illustrations (about 40 in all), plus two large folding maps - one of Alaska and one of the reindeer stations. The large folding map of Alaska is one of the largest foldout maps I've seen -- 33.5x45 inches. Gilt titles on the spine. Very good condition. Scarce. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001572
