This is a profusely illustrated, antique book of "science and invention" - "THE FIRESIDE UNIVERSITY for Home Circle Study and Entertainment" by John McGovern. 1912; Union Publishing House; Chicago and Philadelphia. The book features marbled page edges on all sides of the text block and decorative floral end papers. Richly illustrated with figures, drawings, and photographs throughout (many of which are full-page). From the Publisher's Preface: "We believe no other such book exists, and we present this work for the inspection of the people, sincerely hoping that it may interest them, as being strictly in accord with the trend of modern general intellectual progress." The contents are as follows: Outposts of Science; Electricity; The X-Ray; Compressed Air; Grain and Grain Foods; Butter, Cheese, etc.; Fruit; Nuts; Spices; Coffee, Tea, etc.; Meat, etc.; Pickles, Vinegar, etc.; Salt; The Spectroscope; Chemistry; Sugar; Life; Modern Photography; Light and Heat; Ice; Our Clothes; India Rubber; Needles and Pins; Glass; Paper; China, etc.; Matches; Astronomy. Condition: The front cover has a light stain at the bottom edge, and a thin 1" scuff line near the right edge. Clean spine. Tiny stain at the right edge of the back cover. There is a 1" tear to the cloth at the top edge of the front cover. Tiny cloth tear at the bottom-left corner of the back cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The paper between the rear end paper and pastedown has a 1 1/4" split near the spine. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only some light foxing to the frontispiece and title page. "Discard" stamped in ink on the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
