"In the great tradition of Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and The Scapegoat, a new masterpiece of haunting atmosphere and hypnotic suspense by Daphne Du Maurier. As a young Italian courier for Sunshine Tours, Armino Fabbio led a pleasant, if humdrum life - until he became circumstantially involved in the murder of an old peasant woman in Rome, a woman who had suddenly and startlingly reminded Armino of someone in his past. In a reluctant, compulsive quest for the victim's identity, Armino returns to his native Ruffano, the town in the hills of Italy that he had left 25 years before as a boy unwillingly caught up in the ebb of the retreating German army. Once home - and unrecognized - Armino begins to feel that his beloved birthplace is haunted . by the phantom of his adored older brother who had been shot down in flames in '43, and by the sinister presence of the demoniacal Duke Claudio, who five hundred years before had preyed on the people of Ruffano and become known as The Falcon." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. "I went across the street and bent over the sleeping woman. The furtive odour of stale wine, worn clothes, rose to my nostrils . Suddenly she stirred. She lifted her head. THe features were aquiline and proud, the eyes, once large, were now sunken, and the straggling grey hair fell in strands to her shoulders. She must have travelled from some distance, for she had two baskets beside her containing bread and wine, and yet a further woollen shawl. Once again I was seized with that sense of recognition, that link with the past which could not be explained. Even the hand that, warm sespite the cold air, held on to mine in gratitude awakened an involuntary, reluctant response. She stared at me. Her lips moved. I turned, I think I ran." - from the rear outer jacket, The Flight of the Falcon, Daphne Du Maurier.…

Shopbeschreibung

Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
