Jacket has minor rubbing to head and tail of spine and wrap corners. Small octavo; xx + 306 pp. Dark brown lettering on tan cloth boards. Illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings. Front endsheet has line-drawn map of the southern United States, showing escape route of the Confederate cabinet from Richmond to southern Georgia. Back endsheet has line-drawn map of southeastern coast, showing attempted escape routes of various Confederate officials, overseas from Louisiana and Florida. Binding and hinges sound; clean, bright copy with no markings. From the foreword: "Flight into Oblivion tells the story of a dramatic episode of the Confederacy - the adventures of its civilian leaders as, in April, 1865, they fled south from Richmond in an effort to elude the Unionist pursuers bent on their capture and punishment. Only two, after a dash of almost 2,000 miles, succeeded in escaping capture." Previously copyrighted in 1938 and 1959 by Barnes and Noble, this edition was reprinted in 1959 as part of the Civil War Centennial Series from Indiana University Press.
