Beschreibung
The fourth edition of this scarce sophisticated novel by Lady Morgan, an Irish novel focusing on the social and political issues of the country. The fourth edition of this scarce work.Complete in four volumes.'Florence Macarthy' is Lady Morgan's revenge on John Wilson Crocker, who, in 'The Quarterly Review', attacked Morgan's female characters for being unladylike. In Crocker's review of Morgan's study of France under the Bourbon Restoration, he accuses her of Jacobinism, falsehood, licentiousness, and impiety. This novel is considered to be the most sophisticated of Lady Morgan's four 'national tales'. 'Florence Macarthy' is set in Ireland following the passing of the Act of Union in 1800, a romantic novel with themes of the political and social unrest of Ireland.Sydney Owenson, Lady Morgan, was an Irish novelist best known for her 1806 proto-feminist romance 'The Wild Irish Girl'. Though she garnered a lot of controversy during her career, the likes of Percy Shelley and Lord Byron defended her works.Bound without half-titles. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards, rebacked with morocco spines, with new endpapers. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the joints, showing wear prior to rebacking, heavier to the front joint of Volume IV. Minor bumping to the extremities. A little discolouration to the joints and extremities. Minor rubbing to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 851P21
