Dublin is a capital city like no other. There's a genuine feeling of welcome, of character, of an unhurried lifestyle—a special atmosphere that words cannot define.
Founded by the Vikings more than one thousand years ago, Dublin holds the winning ticket when it comes to location. Mountains, green fields, and coastline mark the city limits and the wide open spaces of Phoenix Park breathe life into the center. The River Liffey cuts through from west to east, shaping the city into two seemingly distinct halves—a densely populated, working class district to the north giving way to a more affluent and privileged area in the south—but look closer and you will find many exceptions and contradictions on both sides of the river.
Dublin was transformed in the 18th century by the vision of its Georgian architects. Subsequent modernization has largely worked in harmony with their designs and contributed to a new urban landscape. The all-glass frontage of the Financial Services Centre soars above the city's old port on the north side, while Temple Bar is an omnium-gatherum of contemporary architecture, converted warehouses, and rediscovered buildings along the cobbled streets between the river and Dublin's bustling Dame Street.
Economic progress has brought about dramatic changes but Dublin retains a human dimension which newcomers find so appealing. The pace of life is a half beat slower than in any other bustling capital and there is always time to pause and enjoy the city. Prosperity has helped reverse the flow of emigration, bringing many Dubliners back from overseas, and their experience of different cultures, combined with a steady influx of visitors, gives the capital a truly international flavor.
In fact, culture is everywhere and there's a palpable sense of a friendly city brimming with youth, vitality, and tradition. Street vendors line the bustling shopping district around Grafton Street, tempting passers-by with flowers and jewelry, while across the river in Moore Street, sturdy women selling fruit, vegetables, pop posters, and chocolate from prams evoke modern-day images of Molly Malone, the heroine of Dublin's rousing anthem. Old-style charm survives in pubs, cafés, and bars, blending happily with the more cosmopolitan pursuits of fine dining, shopping, and clubbing.
Dublin may not be totally efficient, and you will soon notice that time is a very fluid commodity. Public transportation can be haphazard, businesses may not operate exactly within stated hours, and everyone is notoriously late, so be prepared for a bit of give and take and put it down to the charm of the place.
Born-and-bred Dubliners who have lived and worked abroad will tell you that nothing beats the pleasure of returning to the city and the joy of rediscovering familiar places and catching up with friends. Despite the transformations, there's a feeling that some things never change, like the exhilarating summer sunrises over Sandymount strand, the fresh winds blowing over Dun Laoghaire pier, and the swans on the Grand Canal. Perhaps when you come again, Dublin will already feel like home.
