Beschreibung
v, [3], 362 p. 19 cm. Half leather with marbled paper boards. Former owner's label on front free endpaper. Light foxing. Ink signature on title page. Title continues: "Being a Diary of a Winter's Route from Halifax to the Canadas, and during four months' residence in the woods on the borders of Lakes Huron and Simcoe." Sir George Head, an elder brother of Sir Francis Bond Head, produced this record of his first tour of Canada in 1814-15. He was not altogether impressed with conditions, even in the largest town: "On arriving at York, I was disappointed at the first sight of the capital of Upper Canada, which . was extremely straggling and irregular; and the inn was not by any means prepossessing" (p. 175). In his summary, he advises that only younger emigrants should attempt to settle in a colony with a severe climate: "none but the young should venture, - children, and men and women under five-and-twenty" (p. 355). Head himself was in his early thirties when he undertook his journey. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 140141
