Beschreibung
A scarce fictionalised history of Ancient Foresters, illustrated throughout. A very scarce work, illustrated throughout with steel engraved plates. This is volume I only of what would go on to become a two volume set. To the rear of this work is an advertisement for volume II, which had yet to be published at the time of the publication of this first volume, and would be titled 'Forestry from England to America'.Author J. Alison Cushing's preface to this work explains it to be a history of 'the benevolent order of Ancient Foresters'. Curiously, however, rather than a straightforward historical account, this history is presented in the form of a Romance, 'since that allows the author unlimited recourse to the imagination'. Therefore what follows in these pages is a fictionalised account of the historical. To the recto of two of the front endpapers of this work is the former owner's stamp 'V Roland Danner'. In the publisher's original cloth boards, with amateur re-backing to spine. A former owner has labelled the spine in ink. Rubbing to perimeters of boards. Hinges reinforced with adhesive tape to front and rear. Internally, firmly bound. Former owner's stamp to recto of two front endpapers. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd mark. Good.
