Buchbeschreibung Lund Humphries, London, 1971. Hard Cover. Buchzustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Plates (illustrator). First Edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright titling on spine. No ownership marks. 22 plates + 156 pages of text. Clean and tight. Born in Uruguay in 1872, Edward Johnston came to London when the Arts and Crafts revival was at its height. He came under the influence of W. R. Lethaby and in 1899 he began teaching at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London. Today, Edward Johnston is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of the revival of calligraphy, or formal writing, in our century. This unusual man had two particular gifts: one for perceptive and painstaking research into the pen-shapes of letters and the principles and methods of medieval scribes, the other for communicating his findings in teaching of inspiring quality. This early teaching has been enshrined in his manual Writing & Illuminating, & Lettering, first published in i go6, and still important for students of lettering today. Towards the end of his life Edward Johnston intended to set down the fruits of his experience in a further book to be called `Formal Penmanship', and he worked on it for some fifteen years, but at his death in 1944 this book still remained unfinished. From what he was able to set down on paper, and it was a great deal, it has been possible to produce the present volume in the form that Johnston intended. The material has been edited by Heather Child, well known as a calligrapher and writer. The articles which Johnston wrote for The Imprint, a short-lived but influential journal published during 1913, have been included, as these are significant in showing the development of his thought at that date. Also included is an addendum to a paper on the labelling of exhibits. The illustrations in the text include all the bold, practical diagrams for Formal Penmanship defined by Johnston. These have been lucidly redrawn for reproduction by Joan Pilsbury, a distinguished calligrapher. The twenty-four plates give a generous conspectus of Johnston's work. They include pages in facsimile from the notebooks he made for his students, his special writing sheets, and a selection of his own calligraphy in various hands, some of which are reproduced for the first time. The book will be of particular value to teachers and students of lettering, and craftsmen in the field of calligraphy. The centenary of Edward Johnston's birth falls in 1972 and it is fitting, therefore, that Formal Penmanship should be published in time to mark the occasion. Paul Standard, the eminent American calligrapher, says of the book: `Everyone who owns Johnston's Writing and Illuminating, and Lettering will want to acquire this book. Edward Johnston here speaks for his craft with an eloquence and clarity not merely unique, but seemingly preordained. To every working scribe his exposition, his examplar script, and his subtle intercommunion between self and letter-form, together become a revelation unmatched in any other language in all the history of writing since its first invention. This detailed and loving study will delight the layman and inspire the lettersmith.' Size: 4to. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 136662
