CHAPTER 1
PART 1
PRESIDENT NIXON'S COMMITTEEON HEALTH EDUCATION
On February 18, 1971, President Richard M. Nixon presented his"Health Message to Congress."
In the last twelve months alone, America's medicalbill went up 11 percent, from $63 to $70 billion. Inthe last ten years, it has climbed 170 percent, from the$26 billion level in 1960. Then we were spending 5.3percent of our gross national product on health; todaywe devote 7 percent of our gross national producton health expenditures ... We spend vast sums totreat illnesses and accidents that could be avoidedfor a fraction of those expenditures. We focus ourattention on making people well rather than keepingpeople well, and—as a result—both our health andour pocketbooks are poorer. A new national healthstrategy should assign a much higher priority to thework of prevention.
The president highlighted measures to be taken "against the long-rangecauses of illnesses and accidents." One of these measures washealth education.
In the final analysis, each individual bears the majorresponsibility for his own health. Unfortunately, toomany of us fail to meet that responsibility. Too manyAmericans eat too much, drink too much, work toohard, and exercise too little. Too many are carelessdrivers.
These are personal questions, to be sure, but theyare also public questions. For the whole society hasa stake in the health of the individual. Ultimately, everyone shares in the cost of his illnesses or accidents.Through tax payments and through insurancepremiums, the careful subsidize the careless, thenonsmokers subside those who smoke, the physicallyfit subsidize the ignorant and vulnerable.
It is in the interest of our entire country, therefore,to educate and encourage each of our citizens todevelop sensible health practices. Yet we have givenremarkably little attention to the health education ofour people. Most of our current efforts in this areaare fragmented and haphazard—a public serviceadvertisement one week, a newspaper article another,a short lecture now and then from the doctor. There isno national instrument, no central force to stimulateand coordinate a comprehensive health educationprogram.
I have therefore been working to create such aninstrument. It will be called the National HealthEducation Foundation. It will be a private, nonprofitgroup that will receive no federal money. Itsmembership will include representatives of business, labor, the medical profession, the insurance industry, health and welfare organizations, and variousgovernmental units. Leaders from these fields havealready agreed to proceed with such an organizationand are well on the way toward reaching an initialgoal of $1 million in pledges for its budget. Thisindependent project will be complemented by otherfederal efforts to promote health education.
At the same time President Nixon presented his message toCongress, the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPER), School Health Division (an affiliateof the National Education Association, the largest professionalorganization in the world) was reevaluating its role in national health-educationaffairs. On April 6, 1971, the division council took actionto explore the feasibility of a federation of national health-educationorganizations. The concept of the feasibility study was subsequentlyapproved...

Shopbeschreibung
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
