Beschreibung
Aquatint and etching with hand coloring. 9" x 11.5" sheet mounted to 10.5" x 14.5" sheet. Beautiful aquatint etching from Dubourg's "Views of The Remains of Ancient Buildings in Rome, and its Vicinity". The print depicts the Forum of Nerva in Rome, an ancient Roman structure that made up part of the Imperial fora. Dubourg shows the ruins from outside the eastern wall, with a view of Via Tor d'Conti surrounding the Arco dei Pantani. In his etching, the arch is still being used as an entrance to the forum. Several figures are seen along the road, some walking, socializing, resting, and one man on horseback. The figures emphasize the scale of the ruins, and Dubourg's use of light and shadows highlight the grandeur of the architecture. Behind the ancient columns within the forum is the campanile of the church Santa Maria Annunziata ai Monti, demolished in the early 20th century by Mussolini's regime.
