Inhaltsangabe: In this sequence of sketches, the diarist brings to life 14 friends who, unknowingly, formed his values, framed his views, and added relish to his days. Among others, they include Robert Byron swimming in the Bay of Naples, and Rosamond Lehmann communing through a medium with dead loved ones.
From Library Journal:
Lees-Milne (The Last Stuarts, 1983) is perhaps best known for his work preserving historic British homes through the National Trust. His latest book consists of sketches of acquaintances, all now deceased, who, the author notes, "may be called aesthetes, and their interests were mostly esoteric." Of his subjects, the most familiar to American audiences are Vita Sackville-West and Sacheverell Sitwell. The significance of these studies lies not in the biographical information they impart but in their evocation of a way of life no longer in vogue. Of Sitwell, for example, Lees-Milne says, "His mind was like an aviary which released in rapid succession fascinating flights of information like exotic birds." These insightful, entertaining sketches will interest readers even when the subjects are unfamiliar. Highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries.?Denise J. Buchbeschreibung John Murray, 1996. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This is a first edition, first impression of Mr. Lees-Milne’s collection of sketches centering on his friends. A near fine copy in a near fine unclipped dust wrapper. The book appears unread but has been carelessly shelved. As a result the usual slight spine fade associated with this volume is joined by some uneven page browning and a sun shadow to the leading edge of the front cover. A pity since, in all other respects this is an as new book and almost certainly unread. The dust wrapper is now protected by a removable, acid free acetate sleeve. The image you see is a high resolution scan of the actual item. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 9070
