Inhaltsangabe: This is the first full-scale study of the artist, his career and his key contribution to the 17th century Bolognese school of painting. Beginning with an account of Albani's life and artistic development, Puglisi focuses attention on his entirely personal landscapes, then assesses his crucial role as teacher and transmitter of the Carracci reform.
From Library Journal:
This book draws attention to an Italian Baroque artist who is not as well known as some of his 17th-century contemporaries, like Annibale and Augustino Carracci and Guido Reni. Puglisi (art history, Rutgers) stresses Albani's stylistic influencesAespecially the Carraccis, in whose workshop Albani studied and worked, as well as Raphael and TitianAand the classical themes that Albani used in his landscape paintingsAthe Ovid, for example, and the Arcadian pastoral. She also compares his landscapes to those of French Baroque artist Claude Lorrain and explores his reception in the critical literature. Reproductions of Albani's paintings appear in the book in loosely chronological order and are accompanied by provenance listings and a bibliography. Quite disappointingly, however, especially considering the book's high price, all of the plates are reproduced in black and white. Owing to the specialized nature of the subject matter, this book is recommended only for art or academic libraries that support upper-level research in Baroque art.ASandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll.
