Beschreibung
A scarce edition of Bremer's novels The President's Daughters and its sequel Nina, translated by Mary Howitt. Scarce edition. Considered a representation of Bremer's increased maturity, The President's Daughters portrays childhood for its humour while soberly illustrating a reserved young woman's blossoming into a more open person. Its sequel, Nina, attempts to continue this tale in her realistic style with the addition of speculative philosophy she learnt from Johan Boklin, the piece was harshly reviewed. Written by Fredrika Bremer, a Finnish-born Swedish writer and reformer whose works were wildly popular in the UK and US during the 1840s and 1850s. Regarded as the Swedish Jane Austin, she is credited with bringing the realist novel to Sweden. Her novel Hertha prompted a social movement that granted unmarried Swedish women legal majority at the age of twenty-five, and she opened Sweden's first female tertiary school. Translated by Mary Howitt, an English poet and author. Previously held in the library of Lord Grenfell of Kilvey. Bound in full brown calf. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine and small marks to the boards. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot or crease. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper dated 1858. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good.
