Single typescript leaf. The Presidio 27 protest was one of the earliest instances of internal military resistance to the Vietnam War. It was a sit-down protest carried out by 27 AWOL prisoners at the extremely over-crowded Presidio stockade in San Francisco, California on October 14, 1968. The sit down protesters sang "We Shall Overcome" and were charged with desertion with a possible death penalty. The prisoners raised the fundamental questions of democracy within the military; can, and should, rank-and-file soldiers debate and read about the war they are assigned to fight; and what if they disagree with their commanders? This poster details the circumstances surrounding the mutiny and advertises a protest for March 18th, 1969 at the JFK Building, Government Center in Boston.
