The Prison’s Limestone walls at the top of Fremantle have always loomed large over the comings and goings of Fremantle’s town life. Most people knew the walls but very few knew what went on inside unless they were unfortunate enough to do time or worked there. There was a culture that the community could not have understood and, in some cases, not tolerated, but it went on until a dramatic change occurred on January 4th, 1988, when the prisoners violently rioted and burned the prison in protest of the conditions that they endured over decades.

The Prison was listed as a World Heritage site in 2010, which was an important milestone in the ongoing history of Western Australia. Fremantle Prison is a pivotal part of our history; however, it is not only the buildings that are part of that Heritage but also those who were incarcerated, worked and served in the Prison. Until now their stories could not be released but now it is time for these stories to be told.
