Beschreibung
4to (30.5 cm), 276 pp (including 90 plates in color). Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj frayed at extremities, binding slightly dusted). This survey of French manuscript illumination from the 10th to the 15th centuries is based on three significant exhibitions held at the Bibliothèque nationale. The author adheres to the customary division of the subject into two contrasting periods: the Romanesque and the Gothic. During the Romanesque period, spanning from the 10th to the 13th century, no single style dominated throughout France. However, in the Gothic period, beginning around 1330, France emerged as a leading center of artistic activity. The early Gothic style of the Ile-de-France evolved into the 'international' style of Paris. The book features representations of all the greatest artists of the period, not only through a selection of reproductions but also through a fresh analysis and evaluation of each artist's work.
