"The most far-reaching event of Cameron's youth was the death of her father when she was fourteen years old. At that time she had been to school in Reading (the same school that educated Jane and Cassandra Austen) and - in her later evaluation - was growing increasingly worldly. She had been enjoying her expanded society, the new faces, the house parties, the balls, and a life much like that described in Jane Austen's novels. At her father's death the family moved out of their beautiful home at Stanford and into a wretched house in the town of Bridgnorth, taken sight unseen because it was inexpensive. Mrs. Butt retreated from society and began living frugally, carrying what had already been marked parsimony to its extreme. From living the lives of gay young gentry, Lucy and Mary were suddenly isolated from all their society and limited in their means. Their days at Bridgnorth were long and featureless, except for their studies." Dictionary of Literary Biography. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 73
