Revised and augmented second edition of this fundamental treatise on cardiac pathology, based on accurate examination of the organ. Sénac (1693-1770, physician to Louis XV, gives a systematic description of the structure of the heart and his observations on cardiac disease, which he noted to increase in age. He discusses the circulation of the blood, blood transfusion and pericarditis which he relates to inflammation of the lungs and mediastinum; he was the first to use quinine in the treatment of palpitation (Garrison & Morton 2733). The fine engraved plates show different aspects of the heart. The present edition contains 6 additional plates by the French physician Portal who completed the revision of the work after Sénac's death. In additon, Portal provides descriptions of all the plates and several interesting observations on the structure of the heart. Occasional light toning, otherwise an attractive set. Blake, p414.
