THE GENERAL HISTORY OF CHINA, LONDON 1736 . . * These are six excellent examples in folio size, depicting a single person in full native costume, with caption. . * Details of each example, sold separately. All are of the same size, with caption at the bottom similar to: "Engraved by the King's Authority for the GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY, Printed For J. Coote in Pater-noster Row [London]. Below which is: "Engraved for the Geographical Dictionary." [ . * THE ETCHINGS: Each etching has a 'plate mark' at the exterior edge of the illustration, as usual. . 1. "HABIT OF A CHINESE LADY, FROM DU HALDE. The habit of a Chinese lady needs no explanation; it will be fully comprehended by a view of the print. It is necessary however to observe that yellow is a colour peculiar to the Imperial Family in China, all other colours worn by people of all ranks, who, in that particular are at liberty to indulge their fancy." . 2. "A CHINESE MANDARIN IN A SUMMER HABIT." . 3. "HABIT OF A LADY OF CHINA FROM DU HALDE'S HISTORY OF . CHINA" . 4. "HABIT OF AN AMBASSADOR FROM THE GREAT MOGUL." . 5. "HABIT OF THE GRAND SEIGNIOR, OR EMPEROR OF THE TURKS" "This figure represents the Grand Seignior: The Saday or Vest is of silk and generally of a rich brocade, he wears nothing over this in his Chamber, but when he goes to Mosque or gives audience he puts on the Kaftan, which is generally green, yellow, or scarlet, lined or edged with fur. He also ads the turban with three tails, as a mark of state peculiar to himself." . 6. "HABIT OF THE GRAND SEIGNIOR, IN 1749."
