THIS BOOK IS A CLASSICAL STUDY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO SOCIOLOGICAL SERIES. THE BOOK CONTRASTS THE MAKE UP OF THE POPULATIONS IN CHICAGO NORTH OF THE CHICAGO RIVER IN THE EARLY 20th CENTURY. THE CONTRAST IS BETWEEN THE WEALTHY ALONG THE LAKE SHORE AREA, THE SO - CALLED "GOLD COAST" AND THE POOR IMMIGRANT POPOLATIONS WEST OF THE LAKESHORE AREA IN THE NICK-NAMED "LITTLE HELL", WITH ITS "DEATH CORNER," THE BLACK HAND" " AND THE THE SLUMS." THE POOR IMMIGRANT POPULATION WERE MADE UP OF NEIGHBORHOODS OF ITALIAN, "LITTLE SICILY" THE , IRISH, LITHUANIAN, GERMAN AND OTHER POPULATIONS WHO LIVED IN RAMSHACKLE CROWDED HOUSING ON DIRTY STREETS AND RODENT INFESTED ALLEYS AND WITH PEOPLE WITH MARGINAL POOR PAYING AND DANGEROUS OCCIPATIONS. THE NEIGHBORHOODS WERE DISMAL IN THE DAYTIME, CRIME RIDDEN, DIRTY, AND CROWDED WITH PAWN SHOPS, AND OFTEN WITH NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING OCCUPANTS BUT THE NEIGHBORHOODS BECAME VIBRANT WITH ETHNIC RESTAURANTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND TAVERNS AT NIGHT. THE BOOK CONTAINS FIFTEEN SOCIALOGICAL MAPS, A SEVEN PAGE INDEX FOR EASY ACCESS TO INDIVIDUAL TOPICS AND FIVE CHARTS OF THE POOR POPULATIONS OCCUPATIONS, SCHOOLING, CHILDREN, MARGINAL JOBS AND WAGES, CRIME AND EDUCATIONAL MAKE-UP. A PAPER TITLE THAT WAS ON THE SPINE HAS BEEN REMOVED, THE PAPER TITLE ON THE COVER IS INTACT BUT DARKENED, THE UNTEROR OF THE BOOK IS CLEAN AND TIGHT.
