1936. 1st edition. Size - 7.5 x 5.25 inches, pp. [ 6 ] + 293 + 3 (blank), hardback in original cloth with dustjacket. Book condition - Good; general dustiness and light foxing of the preliminaries, especially the endpapers, textblock essentially clean, pencil inscription on the flyleaf - "R O ? Hanlach ? Hamburg, May '45" - no other inscriptions, inner hinges intact and binding sound ; pale coloured cloth with title, author and publisher in three green panels on the spine ; top corners rubbed but not bent, bottom corners also not bent but with slight loss on the lower edge, board edges with some rubbing but no loss and general soiling, back with no marks as such but with soiling along the edges and spots of foxing mainly at the fore-edge, back hinge intact, spine complete with ends creased, spine shows soiling of ends and quite heavy foxing spots but the titlling remains complete and clear, front hinge good, front board is generally dusty with a few small marks and darkening along the top and front edges. Dustjacket condition - Fine ; d/'j is a facsimile of the American first edition (from Facsimile Dust Jackets LLC), d/j in paper backed, clear, removable wrapper. Please see photos for indications of condition. This is the true first edtion of this novel, the UK edtion being published, by Heinemann, later the same year under the title of 'A Gun for Sale ". The date of the inscription in this copy is intriguing, with it being the same month in 1945 that the remnants of the German1st Parachute Army defending Hamburg formally surrendered to the British XII Corps on the 3rd of May.
