Inhaltsangabe: One of the world's greatest reformers, Garibaldi won his first battle against Aegean pirates, his last against German dragoons, and in between went to jail in Russia and led Brazilian rebels on the field. Twice an admiral and seven times a general, and a high government official in at least five countries, his passion always remained his Italian homeland. An unmatched and definitive biography captures every thrilling aspect--personal and public--of this exemplary military figure, supreme politician, and even sometimes-farmer, who succeeded in making his dreams of a united Italy come true. "...dissects every facet of Garibaldi's loveable character and personality...Ridley excels all previous biographers when describing his subject's private life, and this exhaustive study is likely to remain the standard work for many years.--Philip Magnus, The Sunday Times. "Here is the story of a romantic hero who was also an intensely human practical man."--A.J.P. Taylor, The Observer.
Über den Autor: Jasper Ridley gave up his practice at the bar to become one of the leading historical biographers of England, and his most recent book, Lord Palmerston, was awarded the James Tait Black Prize. He has twice stood for Parliament, and his personal experience of political affairs has given him added insight into the career of the most successful of Nineteenth-century revolutionaries. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Buchbeschreibung Viking, New York, 1976. Hard Back. Buchzustand: Near Fine. First. 9 1/2" x 6 1/2. 718 pages including the index. There have been wiser politicians and greater generals than Garibaldi, but none has been more beloved, and the sincerity of his commitment to humanity was rewarded by a popularity that was worldwide. His primary passion was Italy, but he was ready to fight for other nations if he could be convinced that they were fighting against tyranny. (He would have fought for the North in the American Civil War if Lincoln had defined the war as an assault on slavery and not as a constitutional issue.) But while showing him in many roles, Mr Ridley never lets his readers forget that Garibaldi's single burning ambition was to see Italy united, a goal he accomplished in 1860 by undertaking his expedition of the Thousand (the famous Redshirts) to Sicily, and defeating a Neapolitan army of 26,000. Jasper Ridley imposes order and meaning on Garibaldi's turbulent career, and demonstrates from his prodigious research the limits as well as the extent of his hero's achievement. Biography.
