Beschreibung
A biographical work on Italian general and politician, by George Macaulay Trevelyan. Garibaldi is remembered for his attempted re-uniting of Italy. This work is the first of three titles by George Macaulay Trevelyan on Garibaldi. When writing this particular work, Trevelyan was the first foreign historian to research and write on the Italian Risorgimento, which was usually neglected outside ot Italy. Illustrated, with seven maps and numerous illustrations. Garibaldi was the General of the Roman Republic in 1849. The author of this work, Geroge Macaulay Trevelyan, was a British historian and academic. Critics regarded this work, and the other two on Garibaldi, to be 'reeking with bias'. Trevelyan responded to these claims with his essay Bias in History. He claimed that without bias 'I should never have written them at all. For I was moved to write them by a poetical sympathy with the passions of the Italian patriots of the period.' In a full diced calf binding. With gilt stamping to the extremities and to the spine. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Further patches of rubbing to the joints. Crack to tail of rear joint resulting in them being smart but firm. Rear hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Lionellus Ford. Internally, firmly bound. Tape repair to map at the rear, only visible at the verso. Pages are generally bright. Instances of scattered spotting. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers LTH27-H-14
