Beschreibung
A very scarce collection of two works on Edward Hyde the first Earl of Clarendon, one being his own autobiography, and the other being a defence of his 'History of the Rebellion' by John Burton. Two volumes in one, bound with 'The Genuineness of Lord Clarendon's History of the Rebellion'. 'The Genuineness of Lord Clarendon's History of the Rebellion', published 1744, is a very scarce work. The listing on ESTC appears to be for a small paper octavo edition, giving a different pagination, whereas ours is a large paper in a quarto. Jisc also has a copy of this octavo only, which is held at the British Library. This large paper edition is vanishingly scarce. 'The Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon' is a large paper issue. The second part of 'The Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon' has a separate title page and a separate pagination, titled 'The Continuation of the Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon'. There are two indices to the two parts at the end of the whole work. ESTC citation numbers T144783 and T53953. This work is a quarto, with the signatures running as [2], A-K2, L1, *a4, *A-*Z1, *Aa--*Ll2, A-Z2, Aa-Zz2, Aaa-Zzz2, 4A-4Z2, 5A-5Z2, 6A-6T2. With a frontispiece to 'The Life of of Edward Earl of Clarendon'. 'The Genuineness of Lord Clarendon's History of the Rebellion' written by John Burton, a fellow of Eton College and scholar. This work was originally written as a series of papers contributed to the Weekly Miscellany. It was written in defence of Clarendon's work, after John Oldmixon wrote and published a series of attacks on the work, for his supposed insertions and omissions. However, Oldmixon's charges were based on worthless evidence, thus Burton published this work to refute it and to defend Clarendon. Such defensive and offensive pamphlets were common in the eighteenth century. The second part of this work is Edward Hyde's autobiography. This work is another fascinating look at the civil war from the standpoint of a strong royalist, and at his outstanding life. Hyde is now best known for his detailed history of the Civil War, titled 'The History of the Rebellion', and is now known as one of the most important historians of England. He was also the grandfather of two future Queens of England, Mary II and Anne. Being the first Earl of Clarendon, he was the Lord Chancellor to King Charles II from his restoration to the throne to 1667. Clarendon was in good favour for most of his life, before being accused of arranging the King's marriage to Catherine of Braganza whilst knowing she was barren, hoping to secure the throne for his grandchildren. He also showed contempt for the King's new mistress, and because of ill-health, his authority quickly weakened. After a few political hardships, he went into exile. Plate adhered to the front pastedown, showing a portrait of Edward the Earl of Clarendon. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown, 'bought at a shabby shop in Holborn for Sixpence, 1748'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Tho. Taylor 1760', 'L. R. Wagner 1962', '. 1959'. Armorial bookplate to the rear pastedown, 'Thomas Taylor'.
