Beschreibung
A rare copy of this early geographical work, featuring beautifully illustrated maps throughout. With thirteen engraved plates of views, including a frontispiece and thirteen folding maps. Maps are by 18th century geographer J. Bayly, who also created the singularly published maps, a new map of Poland, a new map of the West Indies, and a new world map. William Fordyce Mavor was a compiler of educational works, who occasionally wrote under the pseudonym William Frederick Martyn. In 1808 Mavor was elected mayor of Woodstock, and served the office ten times. However his success came from his work on educational books, many of which, particularly "The English Spelling Book," 1801, passed through numerous editions. He also invented a system of shorthand, which he explained in a treatise entitled "Universal Stenography". With a red and black title page. Volume two of the original two, focusing on Europe and the European islands. In contemporary calf binding. Externally, somewhat rubbed with wear to the boards and extremities. Shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Front board is held by the cords only and rear joint is starting. Copperplate ink inscriptions to the endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound, aside from the first few leaves working loose. Bright and clean throughout, aside from the odd handling mark. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers LTH27-B-7
