Beschreibung
Half calf with ornate gilt detailing to spine and contrasting morocco label. Binding scuffed to corners, slight scuffing to hinges and marbled boards slightly rubbed. Spine: small stain to one panel and tiny scuff to label. Matching marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown: Edward Vernon Harcourt, Naturalist and MP. Minimal spotting to front endpapers, half-title and title. Thereafter, the text is very clean and bright up to where the folded plates are at the rear of the book. Here, the folding creates a gap in the binding and as a result there is spotting to the index pages. Two folding maps within the text and five plates to the rear. Ascension map without fault. South America folding map: small tear down one fold (upper edge) slightly affecting the sea and also a side tear near spine again affecting part of the sea region east of Brazil. Folding cross-section plate (1) slightly creased to edges and with minor spotting to upper edges. Fossil plates (2,3,4,5): a couple of small tears close to the spine but only marginal; slightly creased to edges; some spotting but not severe. Fossil plates printed on heavier grade paper. Edward Harcourt was an English naturalist who wrote about the island of Madeira and in 1856 also wrote to Darwin in response to a note from him, regarding information on the birds of Madeira. Harcourt's pamphlet on the birds of Madeira was of interest to Darwin. A decent copy with an interesting provenance. More details available on request. (1712bbxy).
