London, octavo, [xiv], [1]-647, [1] p., plus 40 woodcut text illustrations, 2 folding maps and 5 engraved folding plates (one colored). Advertisement for Darwin's other works on the verso of the half-title page. ***CONTENT: The results of Darwin's geological studies on his extraordinary Beagle voyage were originally published as three separate volumes issued in 1842-46: Coral Reefs, Volcanic Islands and South America. This volume, called a "second edition", contains the latter two parts, and records Darwin's astute observations in the Cape Verde Islands, Ascension, St. Helena, the Galapagos and other islands, as well as in Brazil, Argentina (especially Patagonia), and the Chilean Andes. An appendix contains descriptions of fossil shells by G.B. Sowerby and Prof. Edward Forbes. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, bright, VG+ copy in a contemporary full-calf prize binding. The front cover bears the bold gilt insignia of the Bristol Grammar School, Bristol, England, founded in 1532. The backstrip has five raised bands, five ornate, gilt-decorated panels, and a black calf title label. Save for light rubbing to the extremities and mild cover sunning, the covers are very well preserved. Contemporary marbled endpapers and matching marbled page edges. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. The text pages and illustrations are immaculate: fresh, crisp, clean and bright. No indications of previous ownership, internally or externally. This is a sound, very attractive copy of an important treatise. BMNH 422. Freeman 276. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers OG5521
