Inhaltsangabe: The misfortunes and missteps of the "last King of America" told through the cartoons of the day.
George III enjoyed one of the longest reigns in English history (1760-1820) at a time when both England and the world were undergoing drastic changes. Yet he remains a dim figure, remembered mainly for his failures (losing America) and his "madness" (which turns out to have been not mental but physical). He was highly unpopular for much of his reign, and this judgment is spectacularly endorsed by hundreds of contemporary caricatures, many reproduced here for the first time. Among George's enemies were some of the wittiest artists of any age, and few took the trouble to be fair. This was the way the English nation saw its king, adding a new dimension to what is ultimately a tragic story. 200 color illustrations.

He entered the House of Commons in 1968 and served as Environment Secretary and Education Secretary under Margaret Thatcher and as Home Secretary in John Major's government. He now sits in the House of Lords.

Buchbeschreibung Buchzustand: New. George III ruled through the golden age of English caricature. He suffered at the hands of the genius of Gillray; the robustness of Rowlandson; and the skilful darts of Cruikshank. This volume presents the many facets of GeorgeÍs complex character: as ïFarmer GeorgeÍ, carrying pails around his farms and selling milk to eke out his finances; as a father let down by his sons, who became debauched womanisers, gamblers and spendthrifts; as Charles James FoxÍs ïSatanÍ; as a cultural patron, founder of the Royal Academy of Arts; as a bastion against anarchy, terror and mob-rule; as the father figure of the nation, who stood up to Napoleon; and as a sick man, suffering from recurrent attacks of madness. Many of these irreverent images have not been published before. A wonderful gathering of images from the bestial to the downright brutal, which shows 18th-century cartooning its savage best. Buchbeschreibung Thames & Hudson Ltd. Hardback. Buchzustand: new. BRAND NEW, George III: A Life in Caricature, Kenneth Baker, George III enjoyed one of the longest reigns (176-1820) in English history, but his reputation fluctuated throughout the sixty years, and its ups and downs were charted with unprecedented candour and wit by some of the great caricaturists. Here, Kenneth Baker draws on his own extensive experience of high politics as well as his personal collection of caricatures to give us a fascinating vision of how the English saw their king. Many of these amusing, often irreverent images have not been published before and they provide a new dimension to the story of one of the nation's most well known but least understood monarchs.
