RAUMER was an established geologist who ran afoul of the Prussian state; after encountering Pestalozzi he devoted himself to education (see NDB). Henry Barnard (1811-1900), editor of the American Journal of Education for 27 years translated and reprinted most of von Raumer's work (see Cordasco, History of Education Qtly, 1971); and Ulich notes the impact of von Raumer on American education. Already in 1859, the American public could read in the AJE about the progressives of the 17th century, who opposed "vain, lifeless, memory-cramming" and encouraged "the understanding of the child in proportion as they omitted the drilling of memory" (Reuben Palm, The Origins of Progressive Education, Elem.School Jnl., 1940), a perennial chestnut.
