Gerald Griffin (1803-1840) was born & educated in Limerick. He lefet Ireland in 1823 witht he aim of becoming a dramatist. He wrote four tragic plays - this being the last of the four. All were completed by 1823. He went to London to pursue his ambition,and hoping that one of his plays might be performed in theatre. Althought he later achived literary success, particularly after this famous work 'The Collegians,' he was never to fulfil his wish of seeing one of his plays performed in his lifetime. In fact, at one point in frustraion he destroyed much of his work and his first play 'The Tragedy of Aguire' was lost and perhaps too his others. In the preface to this book it indicates that that this play was the only one to survive among his papers. After his death some of his friends made efforts to have this play considered for performance. Finally William Macready, who had rejected his first play produced the play at Drury Lane theatre.
