Beschreibung
1887 signed and inscribed first edition, Marshall Brothers (London), 5 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches tall embossed black cloth hardbound, no dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, vii, 293 pp. Moderate to heavy soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to all four tips and slight warping to both boards. Staining to fore page edges. Old tape repair to both front and rear inside hinges. Nicely inscribed and signed by the author on the blank front free-endpaper opposite the title page. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare work, an attempt to trace the divine harmony in the spiritual teaching of the Old Testament, the life of Christ, and the modern discoveries of science. OCLC (No. 266544733) locates only four copies at institutions worldwide - at the National Library of Scotland, University of Oxford, the British Library and Cambridge University. ~KK~ A reviewer in an 1887 issue of The Literary World said: 'This volume is on a somewhat ambitious plan. Its author, struck by the doubts suggested by the Darwinian theory, set herself to study the Scriptures with a view of finding in them a possible harmony in Nature, Reason, and Revelation. The result is given in a thoughtful, historical resume of the Holy Record, with some additional chapters showing the history and development of the Christian Church.
