In good condition. Edge wear along spine, corners are bumped and rounded. Volume I front gutter cracked. Foxing on end papers consistently throughout each volume. Light toning to text blocks in each volume. Bindings are all tight and intact. Unmarked. Previous owner s bookplate on front paste down. Please see photos. An important, scholarly work. Friedrich Christian Diez was a German philologist. This is one of his most important works Grammar of the Romance Languages . He spent most of his career at University of Bonn. His visit to Goethe in 1818 steered his career to understanding romance poetry. Goethe had been reading Raynouard s Selections from the Romance Poets, and advised the young scholar to explore the rich mind of Provençal literature. He became the founder of Romance philology.
