Beschreibung
HODGES, William (fl. 1693-1699). Great Britain's Groans, or, an Account of the Oppression, Ruin, and Destruction of the Loyal Seamen of England in the Fatal loss of their Pay, Health, and Lives, and Dreadful Ruin of their Families. Printed in the Year 1695. 4to., (8 x 5 6/8 inches). Errata leaf bound in at end (first page and edges a bit dusty). Modern half tan calf, blue paper boards. A very dramatic account of the plight of Seamen at the close of the 17th-century: "And indeed their miseries to me seem to be not only great miseries, and new miseries, and fatal miseries, but big-bellied miseries; miseries that beget more miseries, breed more miseries, and bring forth more miseries in a plentiful manner" (page 2). Hodges published at least five pamphlets as part of a one-man campaign to improve the methods of paying naval wages and thus ameliorate the miserable conditions suffered by English sailors (cf D. W. Hayton's biography of Sir William Hodges in DNB). ESTC R13450. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 72lib1233
