Inhaltsangabe: The story begins in the green hills of Pennsylvania, where my father's stories of life in the Navy during World War One imbued me with a hankering for a life in Navy blue. This desire increased after my family moved to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1942. A visit to the U. S. Naval Academy sealed my fate; I knew then that I would not be satisfied until I donned midshipman blue. In this book, the reader will find the story of a young man overcoming various obstacles until his dream of entering Annapolis becomes reality. Graduating with the Class of 1952, I shipped aboard a heavy cruiser, bound for the far Pacific and the Korean War, leaving behind my newly pregnant young wife who spent the next six months alone in California, waiting for my return. This was only the first of many long separations while I was at sea, but dear Peggy managed them with pluck and understanding, a true Navy wife. As the years passed, so did my varied assignments in small minesweepers, first shore duty as an admiral's aide, back to the blue sea in destroyers, induction by Admiral Rickover into the world of nuclear power and nuclear submarines, command of a ballistic missile submarine, and shore duty in the Pentagon on the staff of Admiral Zumwalt, chief of naval operations.. It was during this period that I crossed swords with Admiral Rickover, and paid the price for doing so. Along the way, I had acquired a sub-specialty in naval intelligence, and that field enabled me to escape from the Rickover wrath.. Subsequent flag assignments took me to sea commanding the South Atlantic Force of the Atlantic Fleet; duty in Washington followed with a variety of postings, in the Pentagon and in the White House. My final assignment was Chief of Naval Education and Training, from which I retired after over 39 years in Navy blue. I invite the reader to share those years as told in this book.

Über den Autor: Born in Uniontown, PA, in 1927, Sagerholm graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1946, and enlisted in the Navy. In 1948, he received an appointment to the Naval Academy from the Secretary of the Navy, graduating ninth in the class of 1952. Saw action in the Korean War aboard the cruiser Rochester during the campaigns of 1952 -53 that led to the truce of 1953. Had additional service in coastal minesweepers, destroyers, and nuclear submarines, commanding a ballistic missile submarine from 1968 to 1971. While ashore, he served in naval intelligence, and later, as a rear admiral, worked on Navy budgeting and programming on the staff of the Secretary of the Navy. He commanded the South Atlantic Force, making two circumnavigations of the South American continent, and instituted the first West African cruise in 1978. Following a year in the Reagan White House, he was Chief of Naval Education and Training. He retired from active duty on 1 November 1985. He lives near Annapolis, Maryland.

Buchbeschreibung Outskirts Press, United States, 2015. Paperback. Buchzustand: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.From Green Hills to Blue Seas is the memoir of a young American determined to be a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. With no nominations available from his state s members of Congress, he enlists. From such humble beginnings, the young man makes his own way and retires from the US Navy thirty-nine years later in the rank of vice admiral. Beyond being a compelling story of personal success, From Green Hills to Blue Seas is one of a family s triumph over tragedy and a military community s legacy of strength and national service. Author James Sagerholm s only son went on to attend the Naval Academy. Though his life was cut tragically short during a military aircraft accident, his own son grew up knowing his father had been a hero. That boy became a third-generation graduate of the academy, served his country in Afghanistan, and is now a Marine Corps captain. He encouraged his grandfather to write this memoir, drawing together one family s story and opening it up to touch the lives of other US Navy families. Buchnummer des Verkäufers AAV9781478752950
