The Lord Lovat - From the foreword: 'While I was lying in hospital Stephen Pilkington kindly sent me a typewritten script recording some of his adventures on the hill, notes all written, I understand, in the long winter evenings of the north after hind shooting in Badenoch and Lochaber. I was so impressed with the chapters in the old Eton notebook that I suggested that the contents, compiled originally for the author's own amusement, should be published in book form, either for the benefit of his friends or for public circulation: this has now been done. Those who love deer stalking and the high hills will find particular pleasure in the description of forests that they themselves have known. The low ground is not forgotten; here also there are happy memories of it shooting over dogs, the pursuit of the glen rabbits with a rook rifle or a by-day on the river. This is a book to read after five years of war and abstinence. I enjoyed the spy across to the Invercauld Stables from whence the author's first stag came trotting into Inchrory - deer move in that way in August, generally the flies cause the trouble; but sometimes it is a fox hunter on a last round of the dens, sometimes a bird man looking for the dotterel and golden plover that call so sweetly among the peat hags of the Cairn Gorms.
