This third edition was re-written and brought the story of the Royal Navy’s Gunnery School at Portsmouth down to the year 1930 when it celebrated its centenary. The author relates the history of this important training establishment, founded the year William IV came to the throne. He examines its early days, the entry and training of personnel, the story of the Experimental Department, the instructors at the school, and the history of the old wooden walls EXCELLENT, BOYNE and QUEEN CHARLOTTE in use before Whale Island was ‘created’ in a corner of Portsmouth Harbour.
