Several entries in this book refer to 250 copies being the planned amount, and the final published count, based on holographic records kept by Tindale. We defer to Tindale's written record. Based on Tindale's record book of the number of copies published and printed, the total was clearly 250 in all. . The question of the final number of copies printed and published has always been a controversial and moot point. The original Tuttle prospectus stated 150 copies in two place. Hitherto there were no official, published numbers stated, based on factual evidence. After the publication of the book by Berger, that evidence is now clear and published for all to observe. In the past we have relied on the publisher's prospectus as a guide giving 150 as the number published. . CHARLES E. TUTTLE CO., the publisher issued a prospectus stating the edition to be will be 150 copies. . Also in a letter to us in 1977, Charles Tuttle, stated that 150 copies were published. . In a 1977 letter to us from Tindale, he stated 300 were planned, but owing to a lack of the ancient paper examples, 250 copies were published. . *** THE PUBLISHER, PRINTER & BINDER: . MR. HENRY MORRIS THE PUBLISHER/PRINTER OF BIRD & BULL PRESS: . This work was superbly and meticulously printed by the eminent and celebrated Mr. Henry Morris, the founder and publisher of the famous BIRD & BULL press. We quote him: "But for a truly comprehensive picture of past and present, with many ancient specimens that could never again be assembled, Tindale stands alone and deserves his special place in the world of paper scholarship." . Our Note: Per above, Mr. Morris refers above to "Tindale" to mean: Thomas K. TINDALE's book: THE HAND MADE PAPERS OF JAPAN, Limited Edition of 250 copies. Please see us about this RARE book. . *** THE LIMITATION AND TOTAL NUMBERS PRINTED = 174: Per a note we received from the binder, he stated: "I have looked up our binding records for "Handmade Papers of Japan." Our records show that we invoiced Bird & Bull press for 173 bound copies in September of 2001. In addition. I bound one Deluxe copy [in full vellum] with gold tooling for Henry Morris in November of the same year." . Therefore a total of 173 copies were bound up for sale. Plus one specially bound copy kept by Henry Morris, the publisher & printer of the Bird & Bull press, a total of all copies is 174. . The book colophon has a printed limitation statement of "170 Copies," each was hand-numbered. . *** THE BIRD & BULL PRESS: . WHO WAS THE PRINTER, PUBLISHER MR. HENRY MORRIS: WHO WAS HENRY MORRIS, FOUNDER, PRINTER & PUBLISHER OF THE BIRD AND BULL FINE PRESS: .
