Inhaltsangabe: A young sixth grader fears her friends will desert her when she advances to a special class for gifted children. The author of the Minstrel favorites Kevin Corbett Eats Flies and Heads, I Win writes a lively and contemporary novel about middle school life guaranteed to capture young readers' hearts.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6-- Fearful of being placed in different homerooms, sixth graders KT, Melinda, and Chrissy break into school to get an early peek at room assignments. There they learn that KT has been selected for the school's Learning Enrichment Activity Program (LEAP). Reluctantly, KT joins the gifted group and is dismayed to see Erica move in to appropriate her place with her friends. KT discovers LEAP is not as bad as she had imagined, but being cut out of her former circle is painful. Her family tries to help, but it remains for her to stand up for her principles even though it means losing her friends. The conclusion, while predictable, is nonetheless believable. The theme of exclusion from the in crowd is a popular one, probably because it seems to happen every year in nearly every school. Hermes' insight into the problem of cliques lets her create not only characters, but also situations that are true to life. The writing is accessible and the dialogue is accurate, right down to the all-too-familiar ungrammatical sentence structure. --Phyllis G. Sidorsky, National Cathedral School, Washington, DC
