Beschreibung
A bound run of the Annual Reports of the Hawaiian Historical Society, together with a 20-year run (1967-86) of its successor, The Hawaiian Journal of History. Both publications include scholarly papers presented to the Society pertaining to the history of Hawaii, Polynesia, and the South Pacific. Based in Honolulu, the Hawaiian Historical Society was established in 1892 by a group of prominent citizens dedicated to preserving historical materials, presenting public lectures, and publishing scholarly research on Hawaiian history. The first president was Charles Reed Bishop, who founded the Kamehameha Schools in honor of his wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Governor Sanford B. Dole also served as President of the Society. Early members included historians Nathaniel Bright Emerson and Ralph Simpson Kuykendall. In one of the Society's first meetings, on February 24, 1892, Queen Lili'uokalani was voted Patron of the Society. The Annual Reports and other publications are bound in 12 volumes: 1893-1902 with Annual Reports 1-9 (no report was issued in 1894) and Papers of the Hawaiian Historical Society No. 1-10; 1903-1908 with Annual Reports 10-16 and Papers No. 11-14; 1909-1915 with Annual Reports 17-19 and 21-24 (no report was issued in 1912) and A Genealogy of the Carter Family; 1916-1921 with Annual Reports 25-30 and Hawaiian Historical Society Reprints No. 1-4; 1922-1927 with Annual Reports 31-36 and Reprint No. 5; 1928-1929 with Annual Reports 37-38 and Papers No. 15-19; 1930-1934 with Annual Reports 39-43; 1935-1938 with Annual Reports 44-47 and Paper No. 20; 1939-1943 with Annual Reports 48-52 and Paper No. 21; 1944-1953 with Annual Reports 53-62; 1954-1960 with Annual Reports 63-69; and 1961-1967 with Annual Reports 70-75 and the first issue of The Hawaiian Journal of History. Octavo, twelve volumes: various pagination with diagrams, sketches, and black and white photographs. In three-quarter black calf over black cloth bindings, with gilt titles. The index to the publications of the Hawaiian Historical Society, 1892-1967, and the other 19 issues of The Hawaiian Journal of History are bound in their original printed paper wrappers. Occasional mild foxing to the contents. A bit of scuffing and wear to the spine of the first bound volumes, with negligible edgewear to the others. Some general fading and wear to the wrapper-bound issues. Overall, very good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 74405
